Sometimes people just get things right. It doesn’t really matter what they do, because it will turn out great. Charles Back, of Fairview, has pretty much perfected this recipe.
I chatted to Erlank Erasmus, one of the directors of Fairlife. His company produces a non-alcoholic drink, made at Fairview with partners Charles Back and Wimpie van der Merwe. The idea for Ega came about three years ago when harvesting the pre-harvest green grapes. The grapes were destalked and pressed and settled without allowing any fermentation to take place.
Ega has no added sugar and is high in folic acid and antioxidants. With a taste of grapes, pomegranate and Rooibos (our very own product, known for its healing properties), this salmon pink, alcohol free alternative to wine is absolutely wonderful. When you look at this product packaged in beautifully shaped bottles, you just have to try it. No wonder it was a finalist in the Best New Adult Section at the 2008 Beverage Innovation Awards in Moscow, Russia.
Arriving on our shelves very soon, is Ega Aqua. Packaged in the same distinct bottles as Ega, this product should be available from November 2009 – just in time for our South African summer! This product is manufactured from natural spring water, from a spring in the Paarl mountain. It is also packed with antioxidants as well as added vitamins A, C and E. We all knew that drinking loads of water is good for us, but we never new just how good!
Last but not least, from October, Ega Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil will also be available and yes, in will be in the same great looking bottle. The oil is a blend of 80% Frontoio and 20% Coritina olives making it bold and fruity with a richly aromatic finish. And on top of that, the bottle will look great in your kitchen.
Remember, Ega products are available at the Fairview farm in Paarl. For more information you can also drop Erlank an email on erlank@egalife.co.za.
